Veterans Service

The Washburn County Veterans Service Office provides assistance to veterans and their dependents in accessing federal, state, and county benefits. Services include help with healthcare, education, pensions, disability claims, burial benefits, and VA loan programs. The office also coordinates transportation to VA Medical Centers and connects veterans with local resources and organizations. Committed to supporting those who served, the office offers personalized guidance to ensure access to necessary benefits and services.

Veterans Transportation

Transportation to the VA Medical Center – Minneapolis, MN

Transportation to the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN is a service provided by the Washburn County Veterans Service Commission. The fee for riding is $25.00 (cash or check) for each rider per trip. Caregivers and escorts ride at no cost and spouses can ride if space is available.

When possible please call at least 2 working days in advance to schedule.

We ask that you try to schedule morning appointments if possible, and schedule NO appointments after 2:01 p.m.

Please DO NOT contact the drivers.  All travel is coordinated through the Veterans Service Office.

Burial Benefits
  • Funeral Honors
  • Burial Flags
    A United States flag is provided, at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased Veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Headstones, Markers and Medallions
    The Department of Veterans Affairs furnishes upon request, at no charge to the applicant, a Government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased eligible Veteran in any cemetery around the world, regardless of their date of death.
  • Presidential Memorial Certificates
    A Presidential Memorial Certificate is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current President, to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased Veterans.
  • VA Burial Benefits
    Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any of our National cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family.
  • Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetary (NWVC)

    Burial allowance may be available for eligible Veteran’s burial, funeral, and transportation costs.
  • Dependency & Indemnity Compensations (DIC)
    If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who died in the line of duty, or the survivor of a Veteran who died from a service-related injury or illness, you may be able to get a tax-free monetary benefit called VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.
Disability Benefits

VA disability compensation offers a monthly tax-free payment to Veterans who got sick or injured while serving in the military and to Veterans whose service made an existing condition worse. You may qualify for VA disability benefits for physical conditions (like a chronic illness or injury) and mental health conditions (like PTSD) that developed before, during, or after service.

The Washburn County Veterans Service Office will assist Veterans residing in Washburn County with submitting their service connected disability compensation claim.  Please call the office at 715-635-4470 to set up an appointment to meet with the County Veterans Service Officer in order to ensure you receive your maximum benefit.

  • Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit
    The Veterans and Surviving Spouses property tax credit is a credit equal to the amount of property taxes paid   during the year on an eligible veteran’s or surviving spouse’s principal dwelling. The credit is claimed on the   Wisconsin income tax return. Before claiming the credit, the Veteran or Surviving Spouse must obtain verification of his or her eligibility for the credit from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). A copy of this verification must be attached to the Wisconsin income tax return for the first year that the credit is claimed.
