District Attorney

The District Attorney is the chief prosecutor in Washburn County. In this role, the District Attorney represents the State of Wisconsin and Washburn County in all criminal, traffic and county ordinance violation cases. The District Attorney’s Office partners with the Sheriff’s Office, Birchwood, Minong, Spooner, and Shell Lake Police Departments, the State Patrol, the Department of Natural Resources, and the State Division of Criminal Investigation to enforce laws for the protection of people, property and rights.

The Washburn County District Attorney also prosecutes juvenile delinquency cases and some juvenile ordinance violations.

The goal of the District Attorney’s Office is to promote public safety and the rule of law while ensuring the fair, effective, and efficient administration of justice.   The District Attorney’s Office holds offenders accountable, but also attempts to provide access to services for those within the system. The District Attorney’s Office acts to ensure that victim’s rights are respected and protected.

The District Attorney participates in the Washburn County Drug Court, the Child Death Review Committee, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team.

The Washburn County Domestic Abuse Intervention Program, Marijuana Awareness Program, Community Service, Intoxicated Driver Intervention Program, Electronic Monitoring and Drug and Alcohol Court are criminal justice programs actively supported through the work of the District Attorney’s office.

Victim/Witness Services

This state shall treat crime victims, as defined by law, with fairness, dignity and respect for their privacy. This state shall ensure that crime victims have all of the following privileges and protections as provided by law:

  • Timely disposition of the case;
  • The opportunity to attend court proceedings unless the trial court finds sequestration is necessary to a fair trial for the defendant;
  • Reasonable protection from the accused throughout the criminal justice process;
  • Notification of court proceedings;
  • The opportunity to confer with the prosecution;
  • The opportunity to make a statement to the court at the disposition;
  • Restitution;
  • Compensation;
  • Information about the outcome of the case and the release of the accused.

The legislature shall provide remedies for violation of this section. Nothing in this section, or in any statute enacted pursuant to this section, shall limit any right of the accused which may be provided by law.
