Clerk of Circuit Court

The Clerk of Court’s office is statutorily mandated to provide recordkeeping for the judicial system. The office manages all court files: civil, small claims, felony, misdemeanor, traffic, county ordinance, DNR, divorce, paternity and family. The staff opens and maintains all new cases, dockets, pleadings, takes court minutes, enters judgments, prepares bail bonds and criminal judgments of conviction, enters and vacates warrants, prepares court files for appeals, collects fees, fines, restitution, court appointed attorney fees and any other obligations ordered by the Court. The Clerk of Court’s office also takes care of all other phases of jury management, and other duties as required of the office. The clerk and staff assist the public in accessing the courts and its records.

Supreme Court Rule 72 sets forth the retention, return and destruction of exhibits.

Records

Washburn County Circuit Court records are available to view in the Washburn County Clerk of Courts Office or at the Wisconsin Circuit Courts website. Unless sealed by the court or considered confidential by law, circuit court files are open to public inspection. Records can be viewed during the normal business hours. Older circuit court cases are stored in an off-site location and can be obtained by contacting the Washburn County Clerk of Courts Office.

Records Requests

Copies of court case documents can be obtained by paying the statutory copy fee of $1.25 per page pursuant to 814.61(10) Wis. Stats. Requests may be made by: Call 715.468.4677 to make payment arrangements. Fax a request to 715.468.4678 Email [email protected] or [email protected] Mail your request to: Washburn County Clerk of Circuit Court, PO Box 339, Shell Lake WI 54871. A self addressed stamped envelope for the return of requested documents is required. In person. Certified documents require an additional $5.00 fee pursuant to 814.61(5)(a) Wis. Stats.

Records Searches

Pursuant to 814.61(11) Wis. Stats. a $5.00 search fee is charged for searching files or records to locate any one action when the person requesting the search does not furnish the case number of the action, or to ascertain the existence or non-existence of any instrument or record in the custody of the Clerk of Circuit Court.
